If you're struggling to pick a paint color for your space, look no further than a simple shade of gray. Light gray is considered a "can't go wrong" color. Don't just take my word for it. When you look at Sherwin-Williams' top 50 paints, you'll notice more than half are a shade of gray.

Light gray paint, like Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, is timeless because it allows every other element of the room to stand out. Dark gray paint works perfectly for cabinetry, exterior doors, and accent walls because it's simultaneously bold and drama-free.

This article not only features our the best gray paint colors but also the shades we paint the most frequently during our interior projects. It's a go-to shade because gray interior paint works in all room types of all sizes, well-lit or dark.

While there are dozens of popular gray paint colors, these are Craftwork's favorite gray paints of 2024:

1. Repose Gray

Repose Gray by Sherwin-Williams is a very light and airy shade. It was featured in Elle Decor's as a favorite office paint color and this popular gray paint is also in my home.

“Sherwin-Williams’s Repose Gray is a wonderful, neutral option to offset the pure white molding in an office. It allows the upholstery and furnishings to shine when clients yearn to use pops of color," said Traci Connell of Traci Connell Interiors.

2. Metropolitan

The Renovation Dads, David and Stephen, painted their 'Cowboy Room' in Metropolitan by Benjamin Moore. The gray interior paint shows how bold a light, neutral shade can be.

"This welcoming room gets the best morning light, hosts our guests, and is the best for a mid afternoon nap," the pair said about their guest room.

3. Peppercorn

Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams is a dark, neutral paint color that works for both interior and exterior paint projects. This cool gray interior paint is the prefect color for a moody room, an accent wall, shutters or front doors.

4. Beacon Gray

The dark gray was also used on the accent wall of Katherine Thewlis' Tennessee home. Featured in Apartment Therapy, this dining room shows how a dark shade of gray interior paint can highlight pops of color in your decor.

7. Blackened

The walls of this kitchen are covered in Blackened by Farrow & Ball, a warm gray paint that can work in any space. The paint company describes the gray interior paint as "our coolest white, with the slightest hint of grey, was historically made with the addition of lamp black pigment gathered from the smoke of burning oil lamps."

8. Agreeable Gray

I would like to boldly state that Agreeable Gray by Sherwin-Williams is the most accurately named paint color in existence. We all know someone who has the shade in their home and it's on every "best gray paint" list.

I think we can all agree you can't go wrong with Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray if you're looking for a gray interior paint for your home. All though the shade is lower on our list, most realtors would agree it is the best gray paint color to sell or rent a home.

9. Tranquil Gray

Tranquil Gray was Behr's color of the month for January 2024. Jeremiah Brent and interior designer Nate Berkus, who used the gray interior paint in their living room, described their love of the shade in an interview with Domino.

“I tend to reach for grays that have an undertone of putty or taupe,” Berkus said. “I don’t love a cool blue-gray. I don’t think it ever reads as sophisticated. A touch of brown makes it feel rich and maybe a bit more historic."

10. Seize the Gray

Seize the Gray by Clare

Seize the Gray by Clare is their number one selling gray. Clare describes the paint as "our truest, most perfect gray paint color with no undertones, making it the perfect neutral base. That means it works well with both warm and cool shades, giving you versatility that will outlast your latest comforter and throw pillows."

Cool gray paint colors like Seize the Gray will always be in fashion and this shade might be the best light gray paint on the list.
